19 Days of Thankfulness…Day 11

Today I’m thankful for…

Grace and Mercy. Grace is unmerited favor, we can’t earn it. It is something that is bestowed on us just because. It’s a gift. Mercy is not getting what we deserve (which in my mind is also a gift). Mercy is like a measuring tool. It makes you look at what you do deserve and in the light of that, grants you what you don’t deserve. Sinners deserve death because the penalty of sin is death but because of Jesus we have access to life. The penalty was still paid, we just didn’t have to pay it. Mercy defines the penalty, its judgement and still pardons. In that example Grace was also extended because we didn’t deserve Jesus to pay the price because He was sinless and if anyone should’ve lived, technically it should’ve been Him. Every morning we are promised to have new mercies but not new grace, but even still, it’s extended to His children because we don’t deserve mercy by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully I’ve explained this concept clearly, if not let me know in the comments and I’ll make sure get clearer information.

It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness- Lamentations 3:22-23

So in the verse, I see that it’s because of His mercy we aren’t consumed. If He wasn’t compassionate, He wouldn’t have extended His mercies and we would’ve been consumed. Then it says, they are new every morning. Wow, just imagine if there mercy ceased, the second He decided He didn’t want to be compassionate anymore, we would be consumed but because He loves and cares for us so much not only do we get mercy everyday but it’s new everyday. That tells me that mercy can run out. Great is His faithfulness, for real!!

I see grace working in this as well. Because we, as sinners, don’t deserve the new mercies. Let’s be honest, if we really look at our lives we don’t deserve His compassion. We deserve hell. Our mission in life hasn’t always been to extend the kingdom. Our mission in life hasn’t always been to love Him and His people.

I was listening to Have You Ever by Brandy this morning and it’s a beautifully written, sad song. Unfortunately, I can relate but when I change my perspective I see God saying this about us.  I see His passion for us and we mistreat Him because we tend to chase people, romance, money, friends, etc. He’s usually last and typically it’s not until all of the other things fall through do we come to Him.

“Have You Ever?”

Have you ever loved somebody so much
It makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad
You can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words
But they don’t come out right
Have you ever, have you ever

Have you ever been in love
Been in love so bad
You’d do anything to make them understand
Have you ever had someone steal your heart away
You’d give anything to make them feel the same
Have you ever searched for words to get you in their heart
But you don’t know what to say
And you don’t know where to start

Have you ever found the one
You’ve dreamed of all of your life
You’d do just about anything to look into their eyes
Have you finally found the one you’ve given your heart to
Only to find that one won’t give their heart to you
Have you ever closed your eyes and
Dreamed that they were there
And all you can do is wait for the day when they will care

What do I gotta do to get you in my arms baby
What do I gotta say to get to your heart
To make you understand how I need you next to me
Gotta get you in my world
‘Cuz baby I can’t sleep

healed-heartI can’t speak for you but this opens us my eyes to how lackluster my love walk has been with Him. Don’t get me wrong I love Him but He LOVES me and I think as humans we really can’t fathom how much He loves us because our love seems complete when we extend our love to man and we wind up “singing the song,” Therefore, we fear offering God our best love because we think if He disappoints and we are left “singing the song” then we’d have nothing left. We deceive ourselves into thinking that God is like man because we don’t want to take responsibility for our relationship yet He’s still faithful because every morning His compassion is still there.

I often hear people complaining about how bad the world has gotten but I think it’s because enough hurt people have hurt people and the cycle continues but if there was compassion or forgiveness released it would be different. Like hurt, compassion begets compassion but you need to know it’s there and it’s for you-no matter what we’ve done, when we did it and how we did it because of grace (unmerited favor) we have access to it.

I hope something was said that makes you take hold of the compassion, grace, mercy and faithfulness that is fully extended to you by God and that it would inspire you to extend it to those around you. I always hear, “Be the change you want to see.” It starts with us! 😉
